Wonderful Pons!...Unfortunately I'll never see him on film. I would need lots of persuation to see another Agnes Varda film.

It's one the very best documentaries of recent times....About people who get along by what they find.

In having to endure two viewings of "Le Bonheur" (And I won't blame her for her husbands desecrable "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, but.....!)
There are aspects of French popular culture that are opaque to the rest of the world. Jacques Demy's oeuvre is one of them.
I saw LE BONHEUR at art school and I can't remember a thing.
As you know, Oscar, films are very difficuilt things to make and most of them are bad. They rarely rise above mere professionalism. The good ones have a life of their own. THE GLEANERS is something special. Don't miss it.
Anyway, at least we can agree on LOUIS PONS. I loved everything in this exhibition/book and have agonised over choosing favourites.

I'll have to back Limbolo on this,'The Gleaners and I' is one of my favorite documentaries and its sequel 'The Gleaners and I two years later' is equally fascinating. As for those aspects of french popular culture such as the films of Jacques Demy or the popularity of Bernard Henri Levi, they can be just as baffling to some of the french themselves as they are to the rest of the world...trust me.
I've always been attracted to the off-limits zones of other nations and peoples although, so far, this tendency hasn't led me to savour the delights of JACQUES DEMY, and I am quite happy to see him through the eyes of his wife, who clearly adored him and made 2 lovely films about him: JACQUOT de NANTES and LES DEMOISELLES SONT EU 25 ANS. (There's another one - L'UNIVERS de JACQUES DEMY - but I haven't seen it.)
Ushuaia, I trust you, but I think BHL doesn't belong in the baffled zone. He's come across loud and clear. He is the consummate intellectual dandy - a type which doesn't exist in the UK - and has been one of France's most successful exports since the days of the enlightenment.
Not to argue the point, if BHL's muddled thoughts are often less than clear, I'll grant you they're usually loud enough,what baffles me however is his persistent popularity not his tiresome personnality. Now woudn't you say Oscar Wilde was the epitomy of the intellectual Dandy in the UK? In any case you seem to know more about the history of french intellectuals (not to mention Demy and Varda) than I do so I'll let you have the last word on that.
I guess OSCAR WILDE fits the bill.....But he was Irish and he did end up in France.
I/ve never seen BHL in action so I don't know how tiresome he can be.
By the way, Ush.....Do you like LOUIS PONS?

AGNES VARDA's documentary is not specifically about LOUIS PONS. He is one among dozens of different people who appear in it and talk about how they make their lives and work from what others leave behind.
The images come from a book on LOUIS PONS which accompanied a big retrospective of his work - see the poster above. I have it and you'd be welcome to flip through next time you pass this way.
