Elephant? Tim Watts recently told me that John Huston - a keen big game hunter in the days when celebrities did that kind of thing - said that it was not a crime to kill an elephant but it was a sin.
You're welcome Alberto. Actually, Tim does his John HUSTON impersonation...Very good it is too. (Almost as good as his Maureen O'Hara.) I suspect that Goya's turkey - which the fabulously wealthy Oscar Grillo insists is an elephant - is not often seen because it is 'ordinary' genre painting. I put it up here because of similarities and differences to Chardin's partridge (below). Chardin, the most modest of masters, chose a young partridge - a very common table bird in his time - and depicts him as tragic victim of man's appetite, still clothed in his beautiful feathers. By contrast, Goya's turkey - a bird not honoured by hunting and being unknown to Europeans until the American conquest and having no place in the moral/allegorical scheme - is mere naked meat. Both paintings have Christmas associations and are - I believe - fine examples of our sublimated cult of human sacrifice. The fishes are Christ symbols. The partridge's string suggests hanging - and therefore execution - which was until recently an acceptable form of human sacrifice.... Still is in some places. Oscar you are a vigorous, if impious, moralist. You raise the wretched turkey to elephantness. The elephant being the noblest and most formidable of man's prey.
if it had been done here in the philippines the cause for death of the poor bird was polluted, poisonous fish after all his feathers fell off. horrible!
