I have never heard about this incredible artist. hope I still can find that book. there is another french painter I admire - eugene galien-laloue. he painted mostly paris citry scenes, but a view beautyful country side impressions as well. a few years ago a very nice book with his work was published. hans
Hello Hans, Daniel and I were looking at a book on the advertising art of the Cruise-Line era of the 30's and we came across this delicious piece for a poster by Brenet. Neither of us had heard of him. Daniel, with his usual determination, went and found him out at his home in Paris. Brenet was born in 1902. When Daniel met him he was in his 90's. He said he had stopped painting, but without regrets...He always preferred to work standing up but at that age he preferred to sit. I'll look out for Galien-Laloue.

I didn't know him from before. I think is the best discover on time. How all looks so sketchy and well done. And standing up... I love the answer about the abstract and also Daniel's determination. But I feel very sad when I heard about an artist on his very old age.
There is bravado in Brenet's remark - which I admire - although I don't agree with it. He seems to have posessed an almost photographic eye for things combined with an interest in external appearance only. Introspection was probably foreign to him. Still, the abstract - compositional - structure of his work is immaculate. David Hockney's book on the interelation of photography, optical science, the development of Western Art and what happened to all this in the 20th. C. is fascinating.... and as relevant to an artist like Brenet as it is to the orthodox heroes - Ingres and Rubens - that are the major examples of his thesis.
